Opera North & Nevill Holt present  Don Pasquale

Gaetano Donizetti’s Don Pasquale. An opera buffa (comic opera)

Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti is a classic opera buffa – a fast-paced comic opera brimming with sharp wit, romantic intrigue and sparkling music.

Step into the golden age of Italian cinema with this stylish new production by Opera North, directed by James Hurley, and set in an independent film studio in mid-1960s Rome. Fizzing with wit, glamour and cinematic flair, Don Pasquale blends comedy with the romance and nostalgia of Italy’s film-making heyday. This opera will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.

More About This Event

Gaetano Donizetti’s Don Pasquale

Don Pasquale is the formidable head of Studio da Corneto, preparing for retirement and intending to pass control to his nephew Ernesto, a screenwriter known for populist “sword-and-sandal” epics. But when Pasquale discovers Ernesto’s relationship with Norina, a talented yet struggling actress on the fringes of the industry, he has a change of heart.

Enter Malatesta: a smooth-talking agent and fixer who orchestrates a dazzling romantic deception to outwit Pasquale and secure the lovers’ future, with Norina cast firmly in the starring role. As the drama unfolds, the action moves through a series of evocative studio locations before culminating in a theatrical finale beneath the bright lights of the main sound stage.
